Tryouts will take place the week of Oct 1-4th
Tryout schedules are subject to change. Please check back 24 hours prior to the tryout to make sure no changes have been posted for you applicable age group. Days and times of tryouts will not change.
Registration for tryouts is now open on the ATB web site.
Tryout Schedule and Locations
There are 3 tryouts for most ages. Players must attend at least 2 tryouts to be considered for a team; ATB strongly encourages all participants to attend all tryout sessions. 5th grade boys may have a 4th night of tryouts due to the large number of tryout participants. In such a case, players must attend 3 tryouts.
3rd & 4th Grade
3rd and 4th graders are eligible to tryout for 5th grade teams. ATB will not field 3rd and 4th grade teams for boys or girls. The Arlington county recreational basketball program has 3rd and 4th grade teams.

Tryout Details
What to Bring to Tryouts
Each player should wear basketball appropriate clothes and shoes. ATB prefers the clothing and gear not include any affiliation to ATB or any travel organization (Nova94, Fairfax Stars, Matrix, Hurricanes, etc.). ATB will provide tryout labels to be placed on player’s shorts. Each player should bring a basketball and a water bottle to tryouts as well. Please be sure to clearly mark both with your last name. Last but certainly not least, bring a great attitude and lots of energy.
Arrival
At each tryout session, upon entering the gym, players must check in with a tryout volunteer at the registration table. This will allow us to properly notify the coaches of the attending tryout participants. Each player will be assigned a tryout number and given a sticker to place on their shorts. The player will receive a sticker with their number each tryout night. This number will remain the same for all of the tryout sessions.
Areas of Evaluation at Tryouts
During tryouts, players are being evaluated under several criteria. Below are three of the more important areas of evaluation.
1. Basic Basketball skills
a. Can the player make a layup on both sides of the court?
b. Can the player dribble with both hands while keeping their eyes up the court?
c. Can the player pivot with the ball?
2. Athleticism
a. Foot quickness – Can the player stay in front of the person they are guarding?
b. Aggressiveness – Can the player handle the ball in a crowd?
c. Strength – Can the player rip the ball away from the defense?
d. Tactical Speed – Can the player make decisions on the move?
3. Character/Work Ethic
a. Does the player like to compete?
b. Is the player willing to learn?
c. Will the player dedicate themselves to becoming a better basketball player?
